IMPORTANT – Joint Statement by the Township of Lawrence Park and the Borough of Wesleyville regarding the possible formation of the East County Regional Police Department

The Borough and the Township have police departments that have been operating for over 100 years, protecting and serving the public. However, over time, it has become increasingly expensive and challenging to operate these departments independently. As a result, both municipalities are now exploring collaborative solutions to sustain and strengthen local law enforcement for the future.

To this end, the municipalities jointly requested a Police Regionalization Study from the State. This study serves as a first step in the process, offering insights and guidance based on the experiences of other municipalities within the Commonwealth regarding what a regionalized police department might look like.

The report was completed by the State in February, and its findings were presented in March. Following this, at the Joint Municipal Meeting on April 7th, both municipalities took a significant step forward by establishing a Joint Steering Committee to evaluate and guide the formation of the proposed East County Regional Police Department.

Furthermore, in our commitment to transparency and community involvement, the municipalities have approved the public release of the report. We recognize that public safety is of utmost importance, and we value the input of our residents in this process.

It is important to note that this report serves as a preliminary framework provided by the State. It is not a binding agreement, and in the coming months, both municipalities will continue to collaborate to determine the most suitable structure for our local needs.
