CANADA GEESE
Canada geese are federally protected in the United States under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) and by state law in Pennsylvania.
Intentionally harming or killing a Canada goose in the United States can result in fines and imprisonment. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act and federal law protect Canada geese, making it illegal to harm them, their eggs, or their nests without permission from the U.S. Fish and Wild Service (USFWS). The penalty for harming a Canada goose can depend on the severity of the offense and the state, but it can include:
- Misdemeanor: Up to six months in prison and/or a fine of up to $15,000
- Felony: Up to two years in prison and/or a fine of up to $100,000
If you see a visibly injured Canada goose, you can try to humanely capture it and take it to a licensed wildlife rehabber.
